Different necktie fabrics

The best fabrics for a tie are silk, wool, cotton, cashmere, or linen. The tie fashion during 2014 will have a large focus on wool ties. Moreover, 2014 is the year for the wide (8 cm) tie.

The most used fabric for ties is silk. However, recent years other fabrics have gained popularity. Today there is a wide selection of wool, cotton, cashmere, and linen ties, which many people forget when they are looking for neckties. These fabrics are exciting options to the silk necktie since they are easy to match together with wool winter jackets or cotton summer jackets. The choice of fabric is basically dependent on what time of year and season it is. During winter and autumn, thicker wool and cashmere ties are perfect for wool and tweed jackets, since the wool and cashmere texture and faded colors match well together. Use the four in hand knot when using a wool or cashmere necktie. During spring and summer cotton, linen or silk is the preferable choice, since these work very well with thinner jackets in cotton or linen. Also, the colors are normally brighter and lighter for the cotton and linen fabrics.

If you are looking for a cheap tie you should buy a tie made of synthetically made fabrics such as polyester. Even though natural fabrics should be the preferred choice, there are good cheap ties made of polyester. However, the developments of polyester ties have made a huge progress during the last decade, where the polyester tie nowadays can be hard to distinguish from the silk tie. However, when it comes to lifetime the silk tie outperforms the polyester necktie.

Except time of year, there are other variables to consider when choosing necktie fabric. Sometimes it is a question of pure taste, but there are some policies to keep to.

The woven silk tie is the most used fabric in the workplace. This makes the silk tie closely related to a formal look. Therefore the wool tie and the knitted tie with straight ending work as good alternatives if you want to have a relaxed look and feel less dressed. This also complies with cotton and linen neckties, which make your outfit look informal. The same rules comes with hankies in silk and wool, where silk gives a dressed and formal look.

The wool and cotton tie is actually more comfortable to wear. The soft material makes it a blessing to wear around your neck. Another benefit with cotton and wool is that the texture and discrete faded colors most times makes it a lot easier to match with your suit and jacket. Silk on the other hand is normally sharp and strong in color, making the necktie harder to match.

The silk tie

There are three different weave techniques when making silk fabric. Satin is completely smooth with no texture on the surface, this technique is mainly used for solid color ties and bow ties. Neckties can also be printed or woven. The printed ties are thinner and can have very detailed patterns. The woven neckties are usually thicker with less detail.

The cashmere tie

A tie made of the finest wool from sheep in Nepal. Italian manufacturers have made a name by making extraordinary cashmere ties, but during the last decade the Chinese have adopted their technique and today several great cashmere ties are made in China. It is very common that the cashmere is mixed with silk or cotton, since this gives the tie a better structure where the best qualities from each fabric is combined.

The seven-fold tie

The standard tie is folded four times when manufactured. The seven-fold tie however is folded seven times. The seven-fold tie normally lacks interlining, since it is completely made of the silk fabric, the many layers still gives the tie a good structure. These ties are normally quite expensive since it requires a lot of silk fabric.
